Fill a basin with 5 cm (2 inches) of lukewarm water. Test the water with the inside of your wrist or elbow.
After undressing baby, place him/ her immediately in the water to avoid getting chilled.
Guide baby slowly into the water, feet first. Support the head and keep the neck above water level.
Keep baby warm by gently and frequently pouring warm water over the body, especially the shoulder area.
Wash the body and face with a washcloth. Shampoo once or twice a week. Massage the scalp gently, including the fontanelles (soft spots).
Cup your hand across the forehead to prevent soap suds from running into the eyes during rinsing. Wipe the eyes carefully with a wet washcloth.
Wash baby from top down.
